This year the Club will be entering in a number of regattas and we are looking for members who wish to make up the crew.

MPSC - Work party request

Dear Member,

Work Parties needed! 14th – 18th Feb and 28th Feb - 4th March 2022.

Once again, the winter months are here and it’s time to prepare the boats for the coming season. The Club would be grateful to any willing volunteers who would like to spend some time helping to prepare and equip the boats in time for the potential full summer sailing season.

This time, it’s Lyra of Broadway. She was lifted out on the 10th of January and will be relaunched late March / early April. There will be plenty of interesting jobs to do.......antifouling, cleaning and polishing spring to mind.....so we are looking for help on any day in the week of 14th – 18th Feb and 28th Feb - 4th March 2022.

If you can spare any time, please let us know and we’ll co-ordinate days, groups, activities, refreshments and anything else that needs co-ordinating!

Please feel free to get in touch with us, email or phone, if you want more detail.

With thanks to you all for your ongoing support.

Would you be interested in becoming an instructor for our club?

Dear Member,
I hope you are all looking forward to a good season of sailing ahead and have the books out in preparation to plan where you may sail towards this year.

As a new principle of training within our club I would like to put together a programme of in-house training in addition to the RYA training which is already on the programme, and you are able to book.

With this in mind I am appealing to all instructors of the past, and any members holding RYA Yachtmaster Offshore, who may be interested in becoming a new club instructor and/or developing their skills to become an RYA instructor. If you are interested in this opportunity to pass on your experience and knowledge to your fellow club members and help develop our club further then please get in touch. Once I have formed a training team I intend to have a couple of days out on the water with you to ensure that we are all singing from the same hymn book.

Going forward I would like to develop our in-house training which I know was popular a number of years ago. I intend to run a number of one day and two-day courses, these will be for any member to come along and practice various themes of the day, they might focus on sail trim, pilotage, passage planning, mooring practice etc. This would be your chance to practice or brush up on skills that you have not used for a while or gain new ones. No qualifications would be needed to attend these club in-house training days. Once I have a programme in place it will be put on to the website.

I would be interested to hear from you if this is a pathway you would like to choose towards becoming an instructor.

Lastly on the subject of RYA training we still have a couple of places available for competent crew or day skipper before the summer season kicks off and numerous places in September and October. If you are interested in any of these courses, please get in touch by booking on the website. The club offers these at an incredible rate with an excellent instructor to candidate ratio.

I look forward to hearing from you.

MPSC - New RYA Principal

As you may be aware, in January 2019 Karoline George stepped into the breach and filled the role of RYA Principal within Met Police Sailing Club. Karoline has managed our training and RYA liaison through changing and challenging times at the club, supporting us through the Covid pandemic and helping us re-start training and charters in a safe and effective way. Her help has been very much appreciated and the Club wish her a happy, safe and prosperous future.

We now welcome Melanie into the RYA Principal role and have attached the following as her self-introduction. Hopefully, you’ll get to see or speak to Mel soon but please feel free to get in touch with any of us if you have and questions.

Melanie Calvert - Introduction

I thought I should introduce myself to you all since I’ve just taken on the position of principal of our training at our club.

Firstly, I would like take this opportunity to thank Karoline for all her hard work who’s shoes I shall do my best to fill. I have been a member of our club for 8 years in that time I’ve been lucky enough to meet some of you on the courses I’ve instructed on at our club and I’ve enjoyed those very much. I hope I get the opportunity to meet more of you as time goes on.

I have been sailing most of my life, starting with dinghy sailing on gravel pits while at school. Now, I wouldn’t want you to think I went to any posh school, this was a modern comprehensive and we were sailing in bathtubs in jeans and old trainers, but this is where I found my love of sailing.

When I met my partner Paul, he introduced me to yacht sailing. We occasionally, when we were lucky enough to be invited, would go sailing on other people’s yachts in the Solent, this was mainly as ballast! On one of these days during Cowes week, a yacht we were on hit one of the large lateral buoys and nearly sank. From that moment on I decided I’d learn a bit more about what goes on onboard a yacht before getting back on one and potentially putting myself into any danger.

I decided in 1999 to do my Competent Crew, closely followed by my Day Skipper a year later and then my Coastal Skipper. I gained a lot of experience skippering the yachts for other clubs and eventually gained my Yacht Master Offshore. I then went on to become a cruising instructor seven years ago and have now recently passed my Yacht Master Instructor.

I enjoy sailing very much and have done many cruises, including the West and North coasts of France, the West coast of Ireland, the West Country along with other holidays in Greece and Croatia.

I also instruct at Hamble School of Yachting and at the British Airways yacht club. I can often be seen down at Hamble getting on and off of different yachts.

I’m very much a believer that yachting should be for all and I am very grateful to those before me who have passed on their knowledge to me and I hope that I’m able to help our Club by passing on what knowledge I have gained to you all. I’m a firm believer that every day is a new day out on the water and we are all always learning, including me.

So, I look forward to meeting you all. We’ve got numerous courses available on the program, so if you think you’d like to do a Comp Crew, Day Skipper course or, and I can highly recommend it, the RYA Coastal Skipper course then please check the website or get in touch.

Feel free to drop me a line even if it’s just to say hello and I look forward to meeting you out on the water this year. I hope you can make 2022 the year to get out on the water or try to sail just a bit more than last year.

Happy New Year and safe sailing for 2022
