PSUK Offshore Sailing Championships 2024

The PSUK Offshore Sailing Championships 2024 were held between Monday 13th May and Thursday 16th May 2024. Eight teams entered with two from the Metropolitan Police Service and one each from Cambridgeshire, Devon & Cornwall, Hampshire & Isle of Wight, Sussex, Warwickshire and West Midlands Police.

The teams chartered matched Beneteau Oceanis 37 yachts from Fairview Sailing on the Hamble in preparation for the regatta which was to be run in the Solent by the Island Sailing Club with berthing at Shepards Marina.

The Skippers and Crews met during the late afternoon on the Sunday to be allocated their boats and for the Skippers briefing. Fortunately, it was a warm sunny afternoon and evening as the boats were not available until later in the evening. The Skippers agreed to a pairs competition with each boat putting £10 in to the pot for the winners. Last year by chance the winners and runners up of the regatta were also paired up in the pair’s competition. I thought I would even the field out this year by putting the bottom boats from last year in one bag and the top boats in another bag, the MPS didn’t sail last year so to avoid them being paired together I split them between the two bags, Roger Knight in the upper boats bag and Nick Mason in the lower boats bag.

Monday morning and we were all eventually signed off and free to leave Fairview by late morning with a sail to the start line off of Cowes and the first race at 14:00hrs. Following the race, it was into Shepards to sort our berths followed by a Skipper’s briefing with the Race Officer which was followed by the Island Sailing Club laying on supper for the teams.

Tuesday and Wednesday we managed to fit three races in each day with wind conditions varying from just about double figures up to the upper 20’s, all in all great weather for racing.

The races were closely fought with some very tight finishes with mixed abilities across the fleet.

Wednesday evening, we all went to the Royal Corinthian Yacht Club for a pot supper and quiz night as well as helping to raise funds for Cambridgeshire’s charity,  a children’s hospital.

Unfortunately, we awoke on Thursday with no wind, despite waiting to mid-morning the wind failed to appear and the decision was made there would be no racing.

The final regatta order was 1st Hampshire & Isle of Wight, 2nd Met B, 3rd Met A, 4th Warwickshire, 5th Devon & Cornwall, 6th West Midlands, 7th Cambridgeshire and 8th Sussex.

My attempts to even out the pairs failed miserably as Hampshire & Isle of Wight and Met B were paired together! They generously gave their winnings to Cambridgeshire’s charity.

Thursday evening was the prize giving meal at the Island Sailing Club. Friday was a leisurely sail back to the Hamble.

I would like to thank Ian Goodman from the NCA and Andrew Buchanan, Hampshire and Isle of Wight, for their assistance in organising the event, to the Island Sailing Club for managing the races and most of all the Skippers and crews for making the effort to take part and make the week so enjoyable.

It was a great week enjoyed by all and hopefully more teams will enter for 2025.

A skippers' meeting held during the 2015 International Copper’s Cup Regatta in Croatia discussed the 2016 World Police Offshore Sailing Championships.
