GRIFFIN INVITATIONAL REGATTA
Incorporating the PSUK Offshore championships
Sunday 19th to Friday 24th September, 2021
The Solent
Racing organised by the Island Sailing Club, Cowes
A tentative look before the weekend at the forecast was for heavy wind and rain coming in Wednesday and Friday to cancel all racing and may necessitate an early end to the regatta but as Sunday dawned the forecast for the week was looking up with bright days and lighter winds. What we actually got was fine light weather and spinnakers all round.
Gathering on Sunday evening at the skippers briefing for a check in and last minute introductions and the all important news as to which sitting we were for dinner. We watched as Fairview brought the whole fleet up to scratch for a 7pm handover and all yachts were handed over in fine form. The regatta was to be held on their 16 identical Oceanis 37 and two Dufour 382s - the older Oceanis have lasted really well but our burgeoning numbers meant two from the fleet and the Dufour were newer, close matches and looked good. Seven crews were full PSUK entries.
The Hamble Banana Wharf got us through the buffet in shifts and the fine September evening meant for an inter-fleet mingle across the patio long into the evening.
Monday brought us a sunny day and time to go out and remind ourselves and crews what was where and practice the spinnaker gybes in the very nice force two to three blowing in from the east. In fact the easterly winds were the order of the day for the first part of the week.
The PSUK fleet were mixed in with other services and hence the 18 boat fleet.
Race 1 was from 1430 hours so we gathered at the Island Sailing Club Line and setting off upwind on a short beat towards the east in what was to become the norm for the coming days. The tide had just turned and westbound but completing a zig zag up and broad reaching across the tide we were to finish in 90 minutes and head in to Cowes Yacht Haven to find our berths for the duration of the regatta. First in was Warwickshire with MPSC 3, Ged Ashcroft second in the Police fleet followed by MPSC 1, John Oldham.
Slight confusion over the timing of the full Race Officer’s briefing at the Island Sailing Club preceded the hatch curry for all. The ISC food has moved up a notch and a wholesome curry was served up with many folk enjoying the portions.
Tuesday dawned with the lightest breeze forecast for the week and with it due to die midday onwards. So a 10.00 start saw the fleet attempt again to go close-hauled up tide and down but the wind died to zephyrs before the second mark and the course was shortened with no racing for some hours. Only limited boats finished at the second mark (RORC) The fleet were held out for a while before being called in – some took this to mean Osborne Bay for swimming in the sunny weather and rest – others made their way in but at 14.30 it was called – 'No more racing for the day'. Cambridgeshire's Chris Breeze won the drift with Warwickshire second.
Wednesday was really light and due to build. Surprisingly we went out at 10.00 but there was less wind than the day before, so we waited until 12.00. Race 3 was really short - to prove the wind had filled in enough. East from the line to Royal Thames – W Ryde Middle and back again. We managed it and so the tone of the racing took off. A listless couple of hours got much more active and crews even got to sit high to balance the boats! Two races in the afternoon concluded the day and the discard became available.
MPSC 1 had two firsts and Warks two thirds with NCA 1 having two seconds separating the podium.
Thursday started with a protest meeting. So a delay, but the fleet were out for 11.00 and with a discard in hand it had got very close.
Looking for three races we were able to run through the races in a steady 7-10 knots of wind.
MPSC 1, John Oldham had a second the two thirds. MPSC 3, Ged Ashcroft had a third and two fifths. Rounding the week off in a steady wind, Warwickshire managed three firsts and took the regatta with four firsts, a second and a third.
All round, a good set of races in just enough wind to get results in.
The Dufours did not perform in the lightest wind and struggled – probably needing more wind to match up or overtake the Oceanis’
Competing were three Met teams – Ross Ellison on MPSC 2 came 18th out of 18.
Cambs – Chris Breeze came 13th
Cleveland – Tony Riordan came 12th
Leics – Anthony Onions came 10th
Devon and Cornwall – Jon Bancroft came 8th
MPSC 3 - Ged Ashcroft came 4th
MPSC 1 – John Oldham came 2nd
Warks – Henry Scutt first
