PSUK Offshore championships
Sunday 9th to Friday 14th October, 2022
The Solent
Racing organised by the Island Sailing Club, Cowes
PSUK Offshore Sailing Championships, 2022
Due to the fleet availability, the PSUK champs had to be split from the Griffin
Regatta which was held in September. Both regattas in fact had light winds and
some races cancelled. Fairview had less than ten yachts available in September
for one week for the Griffin and no space for the PSUK crews to join and none
for a week in October - Sunsail could only supply ten in October so the event
was organised in what was the only available week in any fleet.
Five crews assembled – Met, Hampshire, Cambridgeshire, Sussex and
Warwickshire. It is likely a diary clash with foreign based events in the Med
meant some forces sought sunshine over English conditions but it was actually
bright and sunny. (For October!)
Nevertheless racing in the warm and fine October weather, we started the week
off Ryde and racing to Cowes in a passage race with a gate start, the Met crew
collided with Hampshire within the first minute and their boats went in for
minor repairs. Sadly the charterers kept both boats in and, with no spare boats,
they had to withdraw.
Tuesday saw light, fading winds with only one boat – Sussex - making the first
mark with all others retiring as the tide outdid the wind for strength. We had
spring tides running and with up to three knots on Prince Consort buoy we had
buoys racing past us at speed.
Hampshire quickly de-winterised the skipper's small race yacht from Cowes and so
we were a four boat fleet again.
Wednesday saw four shorter races in light breeze where Warks managed three out
of four first places with Hampshire sneaking in on their handicap!
Thursday, the Race Officer was able to set a longer race down east, downwind and
down tide and planning to ride the tide back to Cowes again in light dying airs
– and that is exactly what we did - and whilst the race officer sought a second
long race the tide built as the wind slipped down to less than 5 knots.
And so we headed for the marina and the Island Sailing Club for the dinner
and prize giving.
The fleet was made up of Police officers and staff – serving and retired with
good racing mixed in the variable winds – Spinnaker sailing was possible for
almost every race.
Warwickshire first won the overall championship in 2001 and they took the trophy
home for the second year running – but in a diminishing fleet.
Thanks to Ian Goodman from the Griffin Committee for organising the week without
competing and the efforts of the Island Sailing Club Race officers saw us manage
seven races, which was a respectable number in huge challenging tides on or
around the equinox.
