03/07/23 Looking for a needle in a haystack... I've been searching for an article over the years, which has at last been located...
Looking back, it seems from another world when the 71 boats took part in a Police Dinghy Regatta in 1973. It's still a record entry; equalled but never beaten. The regatta took place in May, 1973 with the intent of proving to our parent sports body for the police, then known as the Police Athletic Association (PAA) and later Police Sport UK (PSUK), that there was sufficient police interest in sailing to qualify for their official support. Eventually recognition was granted and the first formally recognised PAA national regatta took place in 1975. But back to 1973... The regatta was a great success despite the mishaps, injuries and damage suffered by competitors on the first day of the event what with Force 7 wind conditions. It was tough. After the day's sailing I ended up at a nearby hospital, treated for cracked ribs. Fortunately the second day was kinder. It was my first experience of 'travelling' and meeting up with fellow police sailors. At the time, to read a report of the event, I bought the 'Police Review' magazine which carried a record of the regatta. For some reason I kept my copy and filed it away. Time has slipped by since then. Websites have taken over from many magazines and although I have searched and searched over the years, I could not find the magazine with the report - until just the other day. Clearing and sorting yet another set of papers I found the article. The availability of details of police regattas has been solely reliant on the efforts of organisers of events being prepared to turn to and submit results, reports, pictures, videos even. Do the results and reports matter after the event? Only you, the reader can decide. Meanwhile, please take this opportunity to read an excellent report of a national police regatta from the past. 19/06/23
The PSUK National Dinghy Sailing Championships at Shustoke Sailing Club were carried off successfully in winds that were mainly light and weather, sunny throughout the regatta. The event attracted 24 boats with strong contingents from the Metropolitan Police S.C., Avon & Somerset and Cheshire in addition to competitors from West Midlands, Sussex, Leicestershire and Northamptonshire. Congratulations to the overall winner Simon Hawkes (Avon & Somerset) sailing a Phantom. Thanks to the principle organisers, Olly Saunders (Northants}, Harvey Rose (West Midlands) and the personnel of Shustoke Sailing Club. At this time Shustoke SC is being approached regarding hosting the PSUK Dinghy Championships 2024. This year's full results and further detail appear on the PSUK Dinghy Championships page..

17/02/23 From the PSUK Sailing Secretary: As you will be aware the PSUK Offshore Nationals have been set for the week Monday 9th October to Friday 13th October 2023. Five forces have notified me of their intention to compete and others are still welcome to join in. If you are entering the regatta please arrange the charter of your yacht with Fairview Sailing telephone 02380457023. Pru or Charlie will be the best people to assist you but in any event please ensure you specify the charter is for the PSUK Regatta. You need to charter one of their matched fleet 37’ yachts. Fairview are holding ten yachts at this stage, but they are receiving an increasing number of enquiries to charter during the period of the regatta from external charterers. Fairview are only able to hold the yachts for a limited period so please book your yacht with Fairview by Friday 17th March 2023. When you have confirmed your booking with Fairview, please email me to ensure you receive future correspondence relating to the regatta. Further information and the Notice of Race will be circulated once the yacht charters have been confirmed. I look forward to seeing you in October. Owen Poplettowen.poplett@sussex.police.uk

13/01/23 The NCA GRIFFIN INVITATIONAL REGATTA is scheduled for Sunday,
17th to Friday, 22nd September, 2023 |
13/01/23 PSUK Sailing Offshore Championships, 2023 Circulation received from Owen Poplett (Sussex): It is proposed to hold the PSUK Sailing Offshore Championships between Monday 9th October and Friday 13th October 2023 in the Solent. This would be a separated event from the combined NCA Griffin regatta of recent years. The boats will be matched 37’ yachts equipped with Asymmetric spinnakers chartered from Fairview Sailing. During the week Cowes will be used as a base with the Island Sailing Club managing the races. Ian Goodman of the NCA is once more kindly making the arrangements on our behalf. At this stage I am only able to provide approximate costs until we have a better idea of how many will be competing. The yacht charter will be £1899 for the regatta, teams will be required to book and pay for their charter fee direct with Fairview. Marina fees for the regatta will be approximately £200. The regatta entry fee will be £550 per team. As time scales go, this regatta is being organised at short notice. I would appreciate an early response to gauge interest and enable us to set final costs, circulate a Notice of Race and arrangements for chartering. Using the smaller boats with asymmetric spinnakers I hope more forces will be able to get a team together to take part in this event which includes great sailing, good banter, fun socialising and an opportunity to meet with our colleagues from across the UK. Plus of course a bit of competitiveness. Please forward any response, comment or enquiry to Owen Poplett via Owen.Poplett@sussex.police.uk

11/01/23 International Coppers Cup Adria Message just received from Franjo: Dear friends and colleagues
So far we have 10 teams who have already sent Initial Enrolments, and already paid the first part of the fee. We have 15 boats on the option, so still 5 crews to go. But we can't hold an option forever, and we will not take more boats to regatta than those 15. So now is the time to decide if you want to be a part of it.
Please send IE (in attachment), and the first part of the fee if you want to participate. As declared in the newsletter, the attachment deadline for entries is already over, but we decided to prolong it till the end of january 2023. Ensure your participation in the ICCA 2023, it will be more fun, more games and more everything.... Here is a programme we want to present, but it's only a plan...we could change it regarding weather or some other unexpected event.
Miss you all, stay safe and hopefully see you in autumn.
Best regards Franjo Further details on the
