Devon and Cornwall Regatta 2024

Circulation from Jonathan Bancroft

Dear all,

Please note 15th June 2024 which is the Devon and Cornwall Regatta in Brixham

Mixed fleet of club yachts that the skippers race mostly twice a week -its really cheap (probably going to work out at about £40 a head) for a day regatta, inc meal and a pint/glass of wine.

The skippers come on the boats as crew for insurance and it doesn’t have to be seasoned sailors its very much a fleet that we can flex to ensure everyone has a great day out and we use it to encourage newbies. Most years we have seen up to 60 people take part and we usually get a BRNC crew around as well.

The protest fee is £1 million in used euros on deposit in advance.

We will circulate the details closer but we moved it from May to give the PSUK some space.

Best regards

jb

27/10/23 - Circulation from the PSUK Sailing Secretary, Owen Poplett:

Hi All,

At the PSUK AGM the dates for the PSUK Sailing Offshore Championships 2024 were confirmed.

The regatta will take place in the Solent between Monday 13th May and Friday 17th May 2024. The racing will be a one design event using Beneteau Oceanis 37’s chartered from Fairview Sailing at Port Hamble. The yacht charter fee will be £1999 which will include an asymmetric spinnaker, racing premium and fuel.

Prue at Fairview Sailing has provisionally reserved 14 yachts for the event. prue@fairviewsailing.co.uk or telephone 02380457023

If you intend to compete in the PSUK Sailing Offshore Championships 2024 please let me know as soon as practicable, this will enable the race committee to publish the Notice of Race and calculate costs.

As many of you will be aware the regatta has been brought back to May to avoid it clashing with other police and law enforcement regattas. I hope this will see an increase in the number of teams.

Thank you.
Owen.Poplett.

PSUK Sailing AGM 2023

Hi All,

Please find below the provisional agenda for the AGM and the minutes of the last AGM.

If you have any items you wish to have added to the agenda please contact me.

Nick Shaw has stepped down as Treasurer. The Treasurer manages a maximum of 12 transactions a year, prepares a report for the PSUK Sailing AGM and another for the National PSUK Committee.

The National PSUK Constitution directs that we have a Treasurer, for PSUK Sailing to continue to receive funds from PSUK we need to fill this role.

Please can volunteers contact me prior to the AGM.

I will send out a final agenda and any regatta updates prior to the AGM.

I look forward to seeing some of you at the Nationals next week and hope to see many more of you at the AGM.

Regards

Owen Poplett
PSUK Sailing Secretary

A message from the PSUK Sailing Secretary

Hi All,

Just a heads up that the PSUK AGM will be via TEAMS 13:00hrs – 14:30hrs   now revised to 14.00-15.30 hrs on Tuesday 24th October 2023. This will bring the cycle of AGM’s back to where they should be to enable proper planning for future events.

I will send out a TEAMS invite with the various documents in due course.

Nick Shaw has been our Treasurer for many years but now needs to hand over the ledgers. This is not an onerous task. There are probably six to ten financial transactions to be completed each year with an accounts form completed for the PSUK AGM and also for the parent PSUK AGM.

This is a post we need to fill at this AGM! If you wish to know more please email Nick Nick.shaw@ntlworld.com then let me know if you are willing to take the role on.

The next event is the PSUK Offshore Championships which are being held in the Solent between 9th and 13th October 2023. There are eight teams confirmed, we can accommodate further entries if any of you want to sign up at this late stage.

It is proposed to hold next year’s PSUK Offshore National Championships between 13th to 17th May 2024. Please put the date in your diaries and start looking for crew. The date will be confirmed at the AGM. This will bring the regatta back to when it was traditionally held and will avoid it clashing with the Coppers Cup.

If any of you have any items you would discussed at the AGM please forward them to me so I can put them on the agenda.

Cheers
Owen Poplett

Looking for a needle in a haystack...

I've been searching for an article over the years, which has at last been located...

Looking back, it seems from another world when the 71 boats took part in a Police Dinghy Regatta in 1973. It's still a record entry; equalled but never beaten.

The regatta took place in May, 1973 with the intent of proving to our parent sports body for the police, then known as the Police Athletic Association (PAA) and later Police Sport UK (PSUK), that there was sufficient police interest in sailing to qualify for their official support. Eventually recognition was granted and the first formally recognised PAA national regatta took place in 1975.

But back to 1973... The regatta was a great success despite the mishaps, injuries and damage suffered by competitors on the first day of the event what with Force 7 wind conditions. It was tough. After the day's sailing I ended up at a nearby hospital, treated for cracked ribs. Fortunately the second day was kinder. It was my first experience of  'travelling' and meeting up with fellow police sailors.

At the time, to read a report of the event, I bought the 'Police Review' magazine which carried a record of the regatta. For some reason I kept my copy and filed it away.

Time has slipped by since then. Websites have taken over from many magazines and although I have searched and searched over the years, I could not find the magazine with the report  -  until just the other day. Clearing and sorting yet another set of papers I found the article.

The availability of details of police regattas has been solely reliant on the efforts of organisers of events being prepared to turn to and submit results, reports, pictures, videos even. Do the results and reports matter after the event? Only you, the reader can decide.

Meanwhile, please take this opportunity to read an excellent report of a national police regatta from the past. Click on:

The PSUK National Dinghy Sailing Championships at Shustoke Sailing Club were carried off successfully in winds that were mainly light and weather, sunny throughout the regatta.

The event attracted 24 boats with strong contingents from the Metropolitan Police S.C., Avon & Somerset and Cheshire in addition to competitors from West Midlands, Sussex, Leicestershire and Northamptonshire.

Congratulations to the overall winner Simon Hawkes (Avon & Somerset) sailing a Phantom.

Thanks to the principle organisers, Olly Saunders (Northants},  Harvey Rose (West Midlands) and the personnel of Shustoke Sailing Club.

At this time Shustoke SC is being approached regarding hosting the PSUK Dinghy Championships 2024.

This year's full results and further detail appear on the PSUK Dinghy Championships page..

From the PSUK Sailing Secretary:

So far there are six teams confirmed for this year's PSUK Offshore Sailing Championships.

If you would still like to take part, Fairview have still got a few boats available, but they are going to non-regatta bookings fairly steadily so you do need to book your boat.

The regatta is from Monday 9th to Friday 13th October 2023 in the Solent using matched 37’ asymmetric yachts chartered from Fairview Sailing on the Hamble.

The yacht charter will be £1899 for the regatta, teams will be required to book and pay for their charter fee direct with Fairview.
Marina fees for the regatta will be approximately £200.
The regatta entry fee will be £550 per team.

Fairview can be contacted on 023 8045 7023.

If you do book a yacht please let me know for regatta management purposes.

Thank you.
Owen Poplett

A reminder that the PSUK Dinghy Championships take place on

Wednesday-Thursday, 14th-15th June, 2023
at Shustoke S.C., Birmingham

A message from Harvey Rose:
Please find the Notice of Race for the PSUK National Dinghy Championships 2023. We are aiming to have all entries made online via the online portal on the Shustoke website however, owing to a small hitch we are awaiting the portal going live. If this has not been rectified by the weekend I will send you all a paper application to get the wheels moving.

To assist with the ongoing organisation I would politely request that entries are made as soon as possible, once we have a good understanding of numbers we will send out meal choices for the Wednesday evening event.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me or Oliver Saunders and we will try to assist you.

We look forward to seeing you all at Shustoke Sailing Club.

The Notice of Race now appears on the PSUK Dinghy Championships page

From the PSUK Sailing Secretary:

As you will be aware the PSUK Offshore Nationals have been set for the week Monday 9th October to Friday 13th October 2023.

Five forces have notified me of their intention to compete and others are still welcome to join in.

If you are entering the regatta please arrange the charter of your yacht with Fairview Sailing telephone 02380457023. Pru or Charlie will be the best people to assist you but in any event please ensure you specify the charter is for the PSUK Regatta. You need to charter one of their matched fleet 37’ yachts.

Fairview are holding ten yachts at this stage, but they are receiving an increasing number of enquiries to charter during the period of the regatta from external charterers. Fairview are only able to hold the yachts for a limited period so please book your yacht with Fairview by Friday 17th March 2023.

When you have confirmed your booking with Fairview, please email me to ensure you receive future correspondence relating to the regatta.

Further information and the Notice of Race will be circulated once the yacht charters have been confirmed.

I look forward to seeing you in October.

The delayed PSUK Sailing Section AGM for 2022 was held via MS Teams on 6th February, 2023. Details from the minutes are now available via the 'Reports & Stories' section.

The NCA GRIFFIN INVITATIONAL REGATTA is scheduled for Sunday, 17th to Friday, 22nd September, 2023

PSUK championships are proposing a separate date as NCA are limited on boats, NCA can't offer PSUK places on the Griffin regatta at this time, at least until they know what numbers they have - which won't be for a few months.

13/01/23

PSUK Sailing Offshore Championships, 2023

Circulation received from Owen Poplett (Sussex):

It is proposed to hold the PSUK Sailing Offshore Championships between Monday 9th October and Friday 13th October 2023 in the Solent.

This would be a separated event from the combined NCA Griffin regatta of recent years.

The boats will be matched 37’ yachts equipped with Asymmetric spinnakers chartered from Fairview Sailing. During the week Cowes will be used as a base with the Island Sailing Club managing the races.

Ian Goodman of the NCA is once more kindly making the arrangements on our behalf.

At this stage I am only able to provide approximate costs until we have a better idea of how many will be competing.

The yacht charter will be £1899 for the regatta, teams will be required to book and pay for their charter fee direct with Fairview.

Marina fees for the regatta will be approximately £200.

The regatta entry fee will be £550 per team.

As time scales go, this regatta is being organised at short notice. I would appreciate an early response to gauge interest and enable us to set final costs, circulate a Notice of Race and arrangements for chartering.

Using the smaller boats with asymmetric spinnakers I hope more forces will be able to get a team together to take part in this event which includes great sailing, good banter, fun socialising and an opportunity to meet with our colleagues from across the UK. Plus of course a bit of competitiveness.

Please forward any response, comment or enquiry to Owen Poplett via Owen.Poplett@sussex.police.uk

International Coppers Cup Adria

Message just received from Franjo:

Dear friends and colleagues

So far we have 10 teams who have already sent Initial Enrolments, and already paid the first part of the fee. We have 15 boats on the option, so still 5 crews to go. But we can't hold an option forever, and we will not take more boats to regatta than those 15. So now is the time to decide if you want to be a part of it.

Please send IE (in attachment), and the first part of the fee if you want to participate. As declared in the newsletter, the attachment deadline for entries is already over, but we decided to prolong it till the end of january 2023. Ensure your participation in the ICCA 2023, it will be more fun, more games and more everything.... Here is a programme we want to present, but it's only a plan...we could change it regarding weather or some other unexpected event.

Miss you all, stay safe and hopefully see you in autumn.

Best regards

Franjo
