The Coppers' Cup is an international sailing regatta for members of law enforcement agencies.

The 15th Coppers' Cup held
on the Dalmatian Coast, Adriatic:

Held 23 - 30 September, 2017

Updated 12/10/17:

A message from Franjo:-

 Dear Friends and colleagues,

ICCA 2017 is over, and I hope you had a great time in Dalmatia. We were very lucky with weather and wind conditions. I'm glad "Bora" was friendly with us, because you/we don't want to meet her in full power ;-). So, next week I have some meetings with charter companies about World Police Sailing Championship 2018, and I will need your initial enrolments to get the number of the crews to start negotiations. The boats will be 3.cabins Bavaria 41 C, or S, all 2017/18 with spinnaker.

Please send your initial enrolments as soon as possible. Thank you and see you next year in Dalmatia again.

The Coppers' Cup is an international sailing regatta for members of law enforcement agencies.

The 14th Coppers' Cup held
on the Dalmatian Coast, Adriatic:

19th - 26th September, 2015.

Coppers Cup moves to Croatia.

The first International Copper’s Cup Regatta was organised by a group of Interpol sailing enthusiasts from Holland in 1989 when they invited employees from European law enforcement authorities to take part. From those small beginnings the bi-annual event held on the Ijsselmeer, Netherlands each year, has gone from strength to strength attracting over twenty four crews sailing Bavaria yachts of varying lengths in handicap racing.

At the 2013 regatta it was announced that the Netherlands would step down as organisers and Franjo, a member of the Slovenian team, volunteered to host the 2015 regatta in Croatia on the Adriatic.

On the 19th September 2015 twenty four crews arrived at Marina Hramina, Murter Island, Croatia ready to compete at the new venue. The charter of Bavaria 46 footers had been arranged for the weeks racing. There were teams from Netherlands, Sweden, Slovenia, Norway, Spain, Germany, Switzerland, Hong Kong, PSNI, Garda Siochana, UK Waterguard, Lancashire and Dorset.

Six races were held during the week, some longer races around several of the numerous islands and some windward leeward courses. Racing was well organised with good windward starting legs, a high speed rib was on hand to position and move inflatable marks. A lay day gave crews the opportunity to explore further afield when participants took their yachts to a distant island for an overnight stay and a meal at a restaurant on the island. Onshore social events and meals were arranged for several of the evenings during the week allowing crews to socialise.

At the end of the regatta one of the Norwegian teams were the winners and the runners up were the Slovenian team. The Slovenian organising committee made an excellent job of their first Coppers Cup and are all set to hold the next one in 2017.

A skippers' meeting held during the week discussed the 2016 World Police Offshore Sailing Championships. Germany stated they were willing to stage the event but warned it would have to be at a colder time of year outside the expensive charter summer months. Franjo, the Coppers Cup organiser, said his committee were willing to hold the event. A skippers vote confirmed that the preference was for the Croatia venue.

Keep an eye out on this website for details, Franjo is arranging for the charter of twenty Beneteau First 35’s with spinnakers and the proposed date is 10 to 17 September, 2016.

A report from Kent crew member, Steve O'Keefe on the
Interpol Coppers Cup, 2009

Founded in 1989 with biannual events, the 11th regatta in 2009 saw 32 teams from 22 countries competing on the Ijsselmeer, Holland in very high winds. This year, Kent received an invitation to compete and we secured a creditable 8th place against some outstanding sailing teams from Sweden, Finland, Germany, Italy and the UK to name just a few; Countries with fine sailing histories and fine sailors. To finish in 8th place out of 32 against such competition was achievement indeed.

Karl Beverley skippered and put together a team of five to take part and we took over our boat at Lemmer in Holland. Engine problems denied us the opportunity to practice so we entered the first races with none. With Karl on the helm, Jenny Best and Trevor McGrath cockpit crew and foresail trimmers, Nick Grainger on the foredeck and Steve O’Keefe trimming the mainsail the crew had its work cut out to control the boat in the high winds that at times gusted over 30 mph. That’s a force 6 and is called “A yachtsman’s gale” for good reason, so just moving around the boat becomes a challenge and can be a bruising experience.

The first two days were taken up with qualification races to refine the competitors into 2 fleets of 16, the Gold and Silver fleets. This presented a dilemma; do we go for gold or an increased possibility of winning Silverware by ensuring qualification for the Silver fleet only? In the end, we decided that we would be selling Kent and ourselves short by deliberately going for the Silver fleet so took our chances by doing our best. The lack of practice told on the first day and those results limited what might even have been a better placing but they were sufficient to place us in the Gold fleet. During the Gold fleet races the results gradually improved as the week progressed with a 4th place being the highlight… Triumph! In the final races, a rope on the mainsheet jammed in a block just as we rounded a mark among a number of other boats. If the mainsail can’t move you can’t move the boat (it’s like jamming the steering as you round the hairpin bend!) Heart stopping for a few seconds while we fought to free it and meant that we had to retire from the last race and our possible best place of the week… disaster!

The event organisation and hospitality were fantastic. The range of flags flying in the marina was inspiring and it was good to see the Kent Police flag flying among them.

In the end, it was team work that gave us the result; Teamwork plus hard labour, sore shoulders, bruised knees, stopped hearts and at least one cool head. ….. “If you can meet with triumph and disaster”… Then you were sailing in this year’s Interpol Coppers Cup.
