Records and Statistics

This section is based mainly on the statistics of Police Regattas
recorded over many years by Len Gooch.

Police National Dinghy Sailing Championships
During the 70's a number of forces were running their own regattas and inviting other forces to take part. Requests were made to the Police Athletic Association to have sailing recognised as a PAA event.

A main criteria for recognition was reliant on the number of forces nationally who were prepared to support sailing. In 1973/74, the Metropolitan Police held two National Dinghy Competitions to prove that sailing justified PAA recognition and the first PAA competition was held at Hayling Island in 1975 followed by the 1st PAA National Championship at Sunderland in 1976.

The Championship is a handicap event for most classes of mono-hulled dinghy and open to serving and retired Police personnel.

Police National Laser & Single-handed Championships

including the previously named Police National Laser Championship
By the end of the 70's, it was apparent that the largest class competing in police regattas was the Laser Dinghy. In 1979 the first National Laser competition was held under the banner of the British Police Laser Sailing Association.

Originally held as a separate event at the end of the sailing year, the Laser Championship has now been incorporated to run alongside the National Dinghy Sailing Championships.

From 2013 this event becomes the 'Police National Laser & Single-handed Championship'.
