Report & results below...

On Wednesday 16th& Thursday 17th June 2021, Avon and Somerset Constabulary Force Club Sailing Section hosted the PSUK Dinghy National Championships, postponed from 2020, at Chew Valley Lake Sailing Club.

17 boats made up the regatta, mainly from A&S, but with competitors from West Midlands, Hampshire & the Metropolitan Police also in attendance. Most were well seasoned but there was the welcome addition of Harvey Rose from the WMP, making his first appearance.

Light winds were forecast for the two days, so it was always likely to favour the Solos, rather than the Phantoms or Rob Jones’s Devoti D-One.

Race 1 got underway in a force 1-2 wind from the SSW direction, with a triangle course. During the race the winds were shifting and difficult and Simon Hawkes in his Phantom decided to go ashore early to enjoy a cup of tea. This left, perhaps surprisingly, Rob Jones to win the race in his Devoti, with Ian Ingram from WMP and Shaun Welsh, Hants taking the next 2 places in their Solos.

Lunch was taken with the prospect of stronger winds in the afternoon, enabling back-to-back races to be held.

After lunch the wind shifted slightly to the SW and increased to a steady force 2, maybe touching 3 at times. This enabled Keith Harris, the regular Race Officer for Police events at Chew Valley, to hold two races back-to-back with first a triangle and then a windward / leeward.

The second race was won by Ian Ingram, with Simon Hawkes occupying 2nd by 3 seconds on corrected time, Rob Jones 3rd and Shaun Welsh having his discard race with a 4th place finish, with Ken Daniels having his best race, taking 5th spot.

The third race was again won by Ian, with Shaun Welsh taking 2nd and Simon 3rd. Harvey Rose in his Laser had his equal best finish in 8th place.

With Covid restrictions still in place, it was difficult to do anything organised but the competitors enjoyed a meal and some beverages on the clubhouse balcony area.

Day 2 saw a change in weather, with a noticeable drop in temperature and a slight change of wind direction to the west and a very slight increase in wind speed.

Races 4 and 5 were held back-to-back, with first a windward / leeward course for race 4, followed by a larger triangle for race 5.

Both races were again won by Ian Ingram, with Simon Hawkes 2nd both times and David Thomson and Philip Chambers having their best finish in 3rd place for race 5.

The prizes were awarded by the CVLSC Commodore, John Smalley, who had also acted as A/RO for the event.
