Get to sail and race on a 72ft ocean going Challenger yacht
This would make an ideal Christmas present
Dear Member,
After the success of the last 2 years, we are once again chartering one of the
Challenger yachts and are pleased to offer the opportunity for the Club and its
members to support the Tall Ships Youth Trust in one of its winter fund-raising
challenges.
On the weekend of Friday 14th to Sunday 16th March, the Tall Ships will be
holding a Round the Island challenge (race) on their 72ft Challenger yachts. We
have been offered the opportunity for the MPSC to once again enter a crew.
If we can fill a boat (Skipper and 1st Mate will be provided by the Trust) with
a crew of 12, then the cost would be £255 per person which includes insurance.
If we cannot fill the boat, then we would have the opportunity to enter a split
crew with other individuals / organisations.
What's included.
Full weekend based on teams of 12 Includes:
▪ Three days sailing on a 72ft Challenger yacht, they’re famous for having raced
twice round the world, as part of the Global Challenge races in 2000/2001 and
again in 2004/2005.
• Day one, get to know the boat, practise tacking, gybing and sail changes
• Day two race around the island against the other Challenger boats
• Sail back to Portsmouth
▪ Professional TSYT sailing staff; Skipper and First Mate, who will support your
team throughout the weekend
▪ All food and refreshments on board
▪ Saturday evening dinner and prize giving at the Island Sailing Club, Cowes
▪ Full sailing and wet weather safety gear
▪ Berthing
▪ Insurance
For more information about the Tall Ships Trust visit their website by the
following link: http://tallships.org/
If you are interested, please contact us by email contact@mpsc.london
We will hopefully fill the boat on a first come first served basis. Racing
experience is not necessary.
THE FUNDRAISING CHALLENGE
Tall ships youth trust are asking each person to fundraise as part of the
challenge. Every single penny raised goes directly towards helping more young
people from disadvantaged backgrounds to access sailing; equipping them with the
skills and confidence needed to create better outcomes for themselves and their
communities. There’ll be support and guidance along the way from their
fundraising team, and you’ll be given all the tools you need to kick-start your
activities. Every £900 raised could send one young person on a Voyage of
Exploration helping to change their lives.
Please feel free to get in touch with us at the Club if you want any further
information.
Looking forward to hearing from you,
The Directors and Staff

Club News
• We would like to announce that Gareth Granville has now stepped down from his role as director. Gareth has been a director since 2015 and as Vice Commodore has helmed the club through some significant challenges. He stayed on at the last AGM to help the transition for newly appointed directors, and we would like to extend our heartfelt thanks for all he has done and wish him well in his new ventures. A list of current directors and key responsibilities;
Vice Commodore – Stephen Rutter
Operations / Boats / Base – Lead Adam Price | Martyn Potter
Training & Safe Sailing – Lead Gary Bailey | Stephen Rutter
Racing – Lead Roger Knight (Non exec)
Membership, IT, Marketing – Lead Rick Earle | All directors
Finance – awaits treasurer appointment.
• Business Model - We are currently revising our business plan to take the club
forward in strength.
• Need for streamlining and future base This year has been blighted somewhat by
the weather and a few unfortunate occurrences, so income hasn’t been as good as
expected. We continue looking at our options for streamlining and a future base.
Having looked at a variety of options including moving home, we are currently
exploring options to downsize to a more functional and affordable base at
Mercury. News will be released as we have it.. Any suggestions please drop us an
email.
• Safety Updates - Both boats have now been fitted with ‘sailsense’ management
systems (https://www.sailsense.io/en). This system gives many benefits to
protect members and the boats- Both live and historic data which is more in
depth than our standard AIS, and importantly it also has features such as a
grounding alert and others to keep you safe!
Going forward it is capable of providing online management of charters, remote
handovers and defect/damage reporting.
• Have your say! - We are currently preparing a member questionnaire which we
hope to send out soon. It should be simple to complete! This is obviously your
opportunity to help us ensure we are meeting members needs. As ever if you have
any suggestions or would like to offer help please do drop us an email.
Race with MPSC!!
Roger Knight has kindly stepped forward to help coordinate racing within the

We are hoping to have a MPSC skippered & crewed entry in the Little Ships Club

drop us a message.

MPSC end of season 5 day development cruise November 25-29th. Both yachts with
skippers looking to build miles, hone skills and have fun!! A great social
opportunity.

Training
We recognise skills progression has having benefits for both members themselves
but also the club. Following review of figures we have decided to reduce
training fees for 2025. We genuinely believe that we offer training quality and
value which you will struggle to find anywhere else!
2025 course dates and prices are on the website and more dates will be released
on the website shortly.
New Membership
Posters are still available on the boats and these can also be emailed to you if
easier. Please help us share the club benefits and encourage new members in
particular from the Met Police family. We would actively encourage anyone who
feels they can help coordinate this push to reach out.. Your help would be
gratefully received.
MPAA Support
A big thanks to the MPAA for providing significant financial support to the club
again this year. Our funding bid was agreed. They have suggested that more of
our serving and retired members could join the MPAA lottery to help secure the
funding. Just email MPAAHQ@met.police.uk and they will provide you with the
application forms.
Keep Up to Date
Please see the club Facebook page where training videos are now posted as well
as last minute adverts for sailing places: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1017782618299889/

He joined the club in the early nineties and from the outset played a full part
in so many of our activities both on and off the water often accompanied by his
wife Katharine who was also a keen sailor.
He quickly progressed from Day Skipper in 1994 to becoming a commercially
endorsed Yachtmaster in 1998 and a Yachtmaster Instructor three years later. He
ran many Day Skipper courses for the club and many club members benefited from
his excellent sailing and teaching both shorebased and practical RYA courses.
With his natural ability on the water, he diversified and achieved his
Yachtmaster and Cruising Instructor power as well as becoming a VHF radio
assessor amongst his many other skills.
With his jovial manner and sharp wit, he kept members entertained on club
cruises and was an active racer taking part regularly in the Met Police
Offshores and Police Sport UK events. When not racing he frequently supported
the race officer in these events as skipper or crew on the committee boat.
He was an active member of the Exec and non-Exec committees holding a variety of
posts such as Harbourmaster, Information Officer and Offshore Race Manager and
for a time and prior to the club’s incorporation, was also Vice Commodore in
2001/2.
He was granted life membership in 2002, MPSC Colours in 2003 for outstanding
service and MPAA colours in 2008
When the club converted to a company, he was a founder member of the successful
Ops Team supporting members sailing activities doing handovers and receptions
for the yachts and a great deal of maintenance between times.
He was popular and active in the local community having held membership of
Hamble River Sailing Club, RAF Yacht Club and the Royal Southern Yacht Club.
For many years he was the voice of Hamble comms in the prestigious Winter Racing
series hosted by HRSC and was an active golf and bridge player.
He even managed to squeeze some boat owning into this owning a share in a
Westerly GK29 named ‘Ginny Kwik’ which he sailed far and wide with Katharine and
which gave him great joy.
It came as a great shock to all those who knew him when he was diagnosed with
cancer just a few months ago and he passed away at home with his family last
week.
He was a great man, a talented sailor full of character and will be sadly missed
We send our sincerest condolences to his wife Katharine and daughters Rosalyn
and Alison.

Comp Crew/Day Skipper 5 day course Monday 3rd June
At last, the sailing season is now well underway with a recent
change in the weather.
Just to let you know there is still space on the Day Skipper/ Comp crew course
running from Monday 3rd June 0830 until Friday 7th June 1600.
If you are new to the club or sailing, starting with this course and taking it
as comp crew would be a great introduction to both the club, sailing and the
local Solent area.
If you are an experienced crew member already and wish to take this as a Day
Skipper course then please consider that you should hold Day Skipper theory or
the knowledge to that level.
This is a great opportunity to take a course during the summer months with only
3 students onboard max.
The course will be held on Pride, our training yacht. The price is £750 for 5
days instruction including all safety equipment and waterproofs.

Metropolitan Police Sailing Club's
fundraiser for Tall Ships Youth Trust
Following on from last year's successful and fun event, we are
hoping that you will help us fundraise for the Tall Ships Youth Trust to enable
disadvantaged young people to take part in a potentially life-changing voyage.
12 MPSC members are braving the challenges of the Solent in the late winter
months, they will participate in the Tall Ships Youth Trust 2024 Round the
Island Race on Saturday 16th of March 2024, racing against 2 other teams. Our
club hope's that you will support all those taking part and help them raise some
much needed funds for the worthy cause.
The Tall Ships Youth Trust has been changing young lives at sea for more than 65
years. They work with 1,000 young people who haven’t had the same life chances
as their peers due to learning, mental or physical disabilities, behavioural or
emotional difficulties or because they are from low income families. These
voyages enable young people to develop the life skills, social skills, confident
and self-esteem needed to raise their aspirations and make positive life
choices.
Please help us to help Tall Ships Youth Trust continue with their inspirational
work, following the link below

Sea Survival course at the RNLI Poole
Currently I am in the process of arranging a Sea Survival course for later in
the year hosted by the RNLI at their Poole training centre. If this is something
that would interest you, please drop me a line Melanie at contact@mpsc.london to
register your interest. It is anticipated that this will be after their busy
season.
It’s worth noting our courses offer a massive saving on the commercial school

students to a 3:1 ratio unless by prior agreement with the crew this can be
increased to 4:1 ratio with an additional substantial discount applied to all

The training takes place on Pride of Broadway a Hallberg Rassy which is a good
quality 34ft yacht to train on, plus it’s likely that by doing the course on her

Round the Island winter fund-raising challenge 2024
Dear Member,
After the success of last years event, we are pleased to offer the opportunity
to for the Club and its members to support the Tall Ships Youth Trust once again
in one of its winter fund-raising challenges.
On the weekend of Friday 15th to Sunday 17th March, the Tall Ships will be
holding a Round the Island challenge on their 72ft Challenger yachts. We have
been offered the opportunity for the MPSC to enter a crew for one of these
yachts before the Trust goes out to the ‘wider world’.
If we can fill a boat (Skipper and 1st Mate will be provided by the Trust) with
a crew of 12, then the cost would be £245 per person which includes insurance.
If we cannot fill the boat, then we would have the opportunity to enter a split
crew with other individuals / organisations.
What's included.
Full weekend based on teams of 12 Includes:
▪ Three days sailing on a 72ft Challenger yacht
▪ Professional TSYT sailing staff; Skipper and First Mate, who will support your
team throughout the weekend
▪ All food and refreshments on board
▪ Saturday evening dinner at the Island Sailing Club, Cowes
▪ Full sailing and wet weather safety gear
▪ Berthing
▪ Insurance
All details of the event are available on the following link:
Round the Island Race Fundraising Challenge 2024 - Tall Ships Youth Trust,
Sail Training Adventures for Ages 12-80
The Trust will hold the boat for us until the end of next week, so if you are
interested, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us as we will hopefully
fill the boat on a first come first served basis. Racing experience is not
necessary.
THE FUNDRAISING CHALLENGE Tall ships youth trust are asking each person to
fundraise as part of the challenge. Every single penny raised goes directly
towards helping more young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to access
sailing; equipping them with the skills and confidence needed to create better
outcomes for themselves and their communities. There’ll be support and guidance
along the way from our fundraising team, and you’ll be given all the tools you
need to kick-start your activities. Every £900 raised could send one young
person on a Voyage of Exploration – the first of our new three voyage programme,
helping to change their lives at sea. but hopefully you’d also be willing to
look at some charity fund raising to support the event.
Please feel free to get in touch with us at the Club if you want any further
information.
