Coppers' Cup 2015

The first International Coppers Cup Regatta was organised by a group of Interpol sailing enthusiasts from Holland in 1989 when they invited employees from European law enforcement authorities to take part.
From those small beginnings the bi-annual event held on the Ijsselmeer, Netherlands each year, has gone from strength to strength attracting over twenty four crews sailing Bavaria yachts of varying lengths in handicap racing.

Coppers Cup moves to Croatia.

At the 2013 regatta it was announced that the Netherlands would step down as organisers and Franjo, a member of the Slovenian team, volunteered to host the 2015 regatta in Croatia on the Adriatic.

On the 19th September 2015 twenty four crews arrived at Marina Hramina, Murter Island, Croatia ready to compete at the new venue. The charter of Bavaria 46 footers had been arranged for the weeks racing. There were teams from Netherlands, Sweden, Slovenia, Norway, Spain, Germany, Switzerland, Hong Kong, PSNI, Garda Siochana, UK Waterguard, Lancashire and Dorset.

Six races were held during the week, some longer races around several of the numerous islands and some windward leeward courses. Racing was well organised with good windward starting legs, a high speed rib was on hand to position and move inflatable marks. A lay day gave crews the opportunity to explore further afield when participants took their yachts to a distant island for an overnight stay and a meal at a restaurant on the island. Onshore social events and meals were arranged for several of the evenings during the week allowing crews to socialise.

At the end of the regatta one of the Swedish teams were the winners and the runners-up were one of the Netherlands teams. The Slovenian organising committee made an excellent job of their first Coppers Cup and are all set to hold the next one in 2017.

A skippers' meeting held during the week discussed the 2016 World Police Offshore Sailing Championships. Germany stated they were willing to stage the event but warned it would have to be at a colder time of year outside the expensive charter summer months. Franjo, the Coppers Cup organiser, said his committee were willing to hold the event. A skippers vote confirmed that the preference was for the Croatia venue. (Keep an eye out on this website for details, Franjo is arranging for the charter of twenty Beneteau First 35s with spinnakers and the proposed date is 10th to 17th September, 2016.
